A large Asian food store is coming to Providence with rows of groceries as well as prepared foods including sushi, drinks and treats.

Maruichi Japanese Food & Deli will open this spring at 113 Washington St., in the space occupied by Rory’s Market for a year before closing last October.

At Maruichi, shoppers will find the familiar as well as the exotic. They will carry Japanese groceries, a mix of staples, home goods and packaged food items, as well as fresh sushi-grade fish and Japanese cuts of meat. Prepared meals will include onigiri, sushi and sashimi, bento boxes, seaweed salads and other Japanese cuisine specialties.

Staples and kitchen supplies will be available at the new Japanese Market coming to Providence.

The store’s cafe will serve Japanese snacks, matcha lattes and Japanese coffee and teas, according to a press release.

The grocery chain is part of Fuji Mart Corp., based in Stamford, Connecticut. They opened their first market in 1991 in Connecticut. They have since expanded to New Jersey and Massachusetts, where they have two locations in Brookline and one in Arlington. The Providence location is the first in Rhode Island.

The market is known for its special occasion foods during events such as Lunar New Year and Hinamatsuri (Girls’ or Dolls’ Day), a Japanese holiday celebrated on March 3. During these celebrations, the store imports sashimi from Tokyo’s famous Toyosu Market and Miyazaki Wagyu beef. .

The store will be open seven days a week. No opening date has been shared.

“We are constantly seeking communities that are curious and hungry for our unique brand of authenticity and accessibility,” said Joshua Nakama, vice president of Fuji Mart Corp., in a press release from owner Cornish Associates.
