But beyond the celebrity factor, Gans says that when a salad is chopped and tossed, “it combines all the ingredients, adding more flavor to every bite.”

Julie Pace, founder and dietitian of Core Nutrition + Wellness, agrees, telling Yahoo Life, “Chopped salads have become popular because they are versatile, colorful, and so easy to prepare. With fresh ingredients cut into bite-sized pieces, they’re visually appealing and a convenient way to enjoy a variety of flavors and textures in every bite.

In making a delicious salad, Pace says dressing plays “an important role,” but notes that “various textures and flavors, such as crunchy nuts, crunchy vegetables, creamy avocado or tangy cheese, can enhance the taste profile some salad. Is it healthy?

Salad ingredients:

  • 1 head iceberg lettuce, rinsed and finely chopped

  • 1 ⁄4 lb Italian salami, julienned

  • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese

  • 1 15 1/2 ounce can chickpeas, rinsed and drained well

Dressing ingredients:

  • ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil

  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar

  • 2 tbsp. Dijon Mustard

  • 1/2 tsp. every salt and pepper

  • 1/4 cup grated Pecorino Romano OR Parmesan, plus more for serving

Instructions:

  1. To make the dressing: In a large serving bowl, combine oil, vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper to taste; whisk until well combined.

  2. In the bowl, mix the lettuce, salami, mozzarella and chickpeas. Toss with vinaigrette to coat.
