Two-vehicle crash at Sibley and Halsted stops traffic in Harvey

A two-vehicle crash that sent both into a former fast-food restaurant in Harvey shut down traffic at Sibley Boulevard and South Halsted Street for several hours Thursday while firefighters, police and city workers were cleaning up the damage on the road.

Crystal Richardson, deputy superintendent of the Harvey Department of Public Works, said the driver of an SUV lost control and slammed into another car with such force that both vehicles crashed into the abandoned fast-food restaurant located at the southeast corner of the intersection.

A mangled Chrysler SUV sat on a tow truck across the street, its front hood completely mangled and its front axle bent. The front bumper of a second car was in the bushes, detached from the vehicle.

Crews worked to clear cinder blocks from the street while directing traffic away from the scene.

The Harvey police and fire departments could not be reached for comment.
