Mars Planets: Why and when was chocolate discontinued?

MARS is one of the most popular confectionery companies in the world and is the brains behind brands like Galaxy and Skittles.

But fans haven’t always been happy with the chocolate giant, especially when it comes to the cancellation of products like the beloved Mars Planets.

What were the planets of Mars?

The Mars planets were chocolate balls containing different fillings.

The three flavors were nougat, caramel and biscuit.

The nougat and caramel flavors were reminiscent of the original Mars Bar while the biscuit added something different for snack lovers.

They were sold in supermarkets as snack bags and larger bags to share.

Why and when was Mars Planets abandoned?

The Mars planets were abandoned in 2007.

They had proven extremely popular during their time on shelves and were only launched for four years before disappearing, leaving customers devastated at no longer being able to get their hands on them.

The reason for their interruption remains unknown.

Mars planets aren’t the only discontinued Mars product that UK buyers still want.

The Mars Delight, a candy bar made with milk chocolate, caramel and wafers, was last seen in stores in 2008.

Fans were so devastated that they started a petition in February 2017 to bring him back.

The campaign garnered support from more than 1,000 people, but that wasn’t enough to get Mars to reintroduce the Mars Delight.

What is similar to the planets Mars?

Although Mars planets are no longer available, there are still many different ways for chocolate lovers to get their Mars fix.

The original Mars Bar is, of course, still widely available across the UK and can be purchased in individual bars, multi-packs or as snacks.

There is also the Mars Duo which includes two smaller bars in one package.

Some online retailers sell high-protein versions of Mars bars, available in several flavors like Salted Caramel and Raspberry Smash.

Mini Mars Bars can also be found in Celebrations boxes.

They have been a staple in festive boxes since their launch in 1997.

The Galaxy Truffles were also part of the selection but were replaced by the Twixes in 2011.

The topics were also removed from Celebrations boxes in 2006 and have since been completely abandoned.

If you’re looking for a treat similar in size and shape to the planets of Mars, then Revels, also made by Mars, might be for you.

These little chocolate balls feature a wider range of flavors than Mars Planets, with flavors such as orange cream, coffee, caramel and raisin.

They also have Maltesers and Galaxy Counters (which are Galaxy Minstrels without the outer shell) as part of the selection.

Revel fans may have to wait a bit before getting their hands on this sweet treat, as there appeared to be a shortage of packs – both online and in-store – in February 2024.

Mars said at the time that it was experiencing problems with its supply chain after recalling packages of Revels over concerns they could contain rubber bullets.
